A Life Set Apart for Kingdom Work

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
— Jeremiah 1:5

This year, we joyfully honor Professor William Wagner—a husband, mentor, scholar, and servant leader—and give thanks to God for forty years of faithful legal service.

From the beginning, God’s hand has been unmistakable. Right out of law school, William married his beloved wife, Marilyn, and together they chose a different path—not one of prestige or power, but one of purpose. God placed in William’s heart a calling: to do good, protect the defenseless, and promote good governance under the rule of law.

A Calling Lived Out Across Three Branches of Government

William began his career in Michigan, serving as Legal Counsel to the Michigan Senate, then led by Senator John Engler. Soon after, he was called to Washington, D.C., where he served in the United States Senate as Legal Counsel for the Commerce Committee under Senator John Danforth.

In the Legislative Branch, William saw the promise and brokenness of human governance. The experience shaped his understanding of justice—and humanity’s constant need for moral clarity.

God next led him to the Executive Branch as an Assistant United States Attorney with the Department of Justice, prosecuting organized crime, racketeering, and later, crimes against children. Each case was a confrontation with evil itself—and a vivid reminder of mankind’s deep need for redemption.

“When justice is rooted in truth, freedom flourishes.”
— William Wagner

While working a trial in Tallahassee, William called home:
“Marilyn, they’ve offered me a position in Gainesville. What do you think?”
Without hesitation, she replied, “Yes—let’s do it!”

In Gainesville, Florida, William joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida and began teaching at the University of Florida—becoming, as he often says, “a Gator for life.”

It was there, in the courtroom and the classroom, that his twin passions—justice and discipleship—began to intertwine.

Diplomatic Service and Lessons in True Freedom

God’s next assignment was an extraordinary opportunity to shine Light in the darkness. William was chosen to lead a diplomatic mission to Liberia, a nation torn apart by civil war and tyranny.

Charged with helping rebuild Liberia’s legal system, he quickly realized that laws alone cannot heal a nation—only changed hearts can.

To reach even those who could not read, he created a wordless book explaining the Liberian Constitution, teaching villagers about their God-given rights. Many walked miles to hear the message—and when they understood, they stood firm against oppression. The seeds of liberty began to take root.

“Righteousness exalts a nation.”
— Proverbs 14:34

From Prosecutor to Judge

Upon returning to the U.S., William entered the Judicial Branch as a Federal Magistrate Judge in the Northern District of Florida. In that sacred role, he learned firsthand the humility and discernment required to wield authority rightly—always under the rule of law.

During this same period, he led Habitat for Humanity, guiding families to build homes and new beginnings through hard work and hope. Each family contributed “sweat equity” before receiving the keys—a powerful image of grace and diligence working hand-in-hand.

By this time, William had served in all three branches of government—Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. Each experience became a thread in the tapestry of a life devoted to justice and truth.

The Professor and the Advocate

Returning home to Michigan, William became a Professor of Constitutional Law, where his deep faith and understanding of government came together in powerful harmony.

In the classroom, he inspired students to see law not as a mere profession but as a calling—a means to advance justice and protect liberty. Many of his students, shaped by his mentorship, now serve in influential positions across the country.

During a sabbatical in London, William engaged in global religious liberty advocacy. There, he met a former Muslim Imam who had come to Christ after reading Scripture. The man became a spiritual mentor, helping William grasp the unseen battle of belief and truth in the culture and around the world.

“God is the grand Weaver.”
Every experience—each courtroom, classroom, and country—had been preparing William for what came next.

Defending Religious Liberty Across Nations

While still teaching, William became increasingly active in international religious liberty cases. Among the first was Pastor Åke Green’s in Sweden—arrested for preaching the Bible. The case reached Sweden’s Supreme Court, and the sermon condemned as “too dangerous” for a small congregation ended up being broadcast to the entire nation. The also Lord opened doors for him to work with the UK Parliament and even the United Nations, where he advocated for religious liberty and civil rights.

It was a divine reminder: when man tries to silence truth, God amplifies it.

This growing conviction would soon give birth to a new ministry.

The Birth of Salt & Light Global

One Sunday after church, a conversation with his pastor became a moment of confirmation.

“At some point,” the pastor said, “you may need to take the deep plunge and do this full-time.”

Within weeks, William and Marilyn obeyed. They stepped out in faith and founded Salt & Light Global (SLG).

Since then, William has contributed to over 60 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, helping overturn or weaken multiple harmful precedents and restore our bedrock liberties. Through SLG, he has trained and equipped believers nationwide to understand, live out, and defend biblical truth and constitutional freedom.

“Salt preserves and seasons. Light reveals truth.
Our mission is to be both.”
— Professor William Wagner

A Legacy of Faithfulness and Courage

Today, we thank God for the life and leadership of Professor William Wagner:

  • For his steadfast passion to serve Christ
  • For his wisdom in guiding Salt & Light Global
  • For equipping the next generation through the Wilberforce Fellowship
  • For his faithful defense of life, liberty, and family
  • For his quiet strength, patient counsel, and tireless work ethic

When challenges arise, he does not give up. Like Jehoshaphat, he knows that “the battle is not yours, but God’s.”

His faithful witness has helped keep open the doors for the Gospel in our courts, classrooms, and communities.

To God Be the Glory

For a life faithfully lived in service,
For forty years of legal advocacy and leadership,
For shining His light in the halls of justice, the classroom, and the culture—

We thank you, Professor Wagner.
And to the One who called, equipped, and sustained you every step of the way—
To God be the glory.
