The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) recently proposed adoption of new K-12 Health Education Standards Framework for the adoption by the State Board of Education. As part of the public dialogue on this important issue, a historic number citizens participated respectfully during the October 14th State Board of Education meeting and shared their concerns with their elected officials serving on the board.

It was disappointing and disconcerting to see the official press release of the Department just hours after the meeting where the State Board of Education President, Dr. Pamela Pugh, stated “P oliticians, media, and advocacy groups have spread falsehoods to scare parents into thinking that schools would teach sex education to their children without giving parents a chance to opt out from the instruction.
