Last week in our nation’s Capitol, I watched politicians govern the nation. Most importantly, I met with U.S. Senators about the Supreme Court nomination. Besides that, I visited with journalists covering the news. Here is my eye-opening account of the current state of the Union.
No longer one Nation under God, indivisible
I observed a nation in the midst of an ideological civil war. No longer content with enacting leftist policy, well-funded activists unabashedly pursue overthrow of the constitutional order. Highly organized and emotional, they prefer a regime of experts to govern the nation. An unelected federal judiciary and administrative state offer convenient infrastructure, for the takeover. Here activist judges and bureaucrats routinely ignore the Constitution to proclaim radical public policy — all with no political accountability to the people.
The Supreme Court Nomination
The President’s Supreme Court’s nominee concerns the leftists. Why? Because he might read the Constitution, and apply its plain meaning to resolve disputes. In other words, he might uphold the Constitution as the Rule of Law for the nation.
And so, leftists see the appointment as something that impedes their preferred political ideology. With passion they literally scream about how the nominee might “vote” on abortion. Or how he will give exemptions to religious bigots from anti-discrimination laws. Or how he might vote for guns, and against voting rights for undocumented immigrants. What they really object to though, is the restoration of the Constitution as the Rule of Law.
A Call to Action for Christian Citizens
Those on the attack despise the idea of one Nation under God indivisible. That is very troubling prospect for Christian citizens. Will we publicly stand, therefore, against those seeking to overthrow constitutional governance? Or will we passively submit to a bloodless coup. Will the next generation lose the constitutional freedoms of speech and religion necessary to speak truth as part of the marketplace of ideas? Or more importantly, to share the Good News of the Gospel? Our choice to actively engage or not has great consequences.
