Earlier today, the Michigan Senate Committee on Local Government held a hearing on SB 285, SB 286, and SB 287, which, among other things, criminalizes and heavily fines members of the clergy who officiate marriage ceremonies for couples seeking a spiritual union without a government permission slip. The bill package also contains many other dangerous elements that put women and the vulnerable at increased risk of coercion and exploitation. The bills passed out of committee with favorable recommendations, with votes strictly divided among partisan lines. Read the testimony of Professor Wagner and Katherine Bussard below.
